Florida's Shark Bite Statistics in 2023

Overview

Florida has consistently been ranked among the world's top regions for shark bites. In 2023, the state continued this trend, with 16 reported cases. This represented 44% of the total shark bites in the United States and 23% of unprovoked bites worldwide.

Historical Perspective

According to the Florida Museum's shark attack file, the state has experienced a total of 896 shark attacks since 1837, making it the second leading state in terms of shark attacks. Bull sharks have accounted for the most bites (175), followed by tiger sharks (125).

Geographic Distribution

Half of the 16 shark attacks in Florida in 2023 occurred in one county. The breakdown by county is as follows:

  • Brevard County: 8
  • Volusia County: 4
  • Duval County: 2
  • Palm Beach County: 1
  • Santa Rosa County: 1

Unprovoked Attacks

Of the 33 unprovoked shark attacks in the United States in 2023, 16 occurred in Florida. This represented 48% of unprovoked bites nationwide and 28% of unprovoked bites worldwide.

Safety Tips

While shark bites are a concern, the odds of being attacked are extremely low. By following certain safety tips, beachgoers can reduce their risk:

  • Swim during daylight hours when sharks are less active.
  • Avoid areas with known shark activity.
  • Swim in groups to deter sharks.
  • If you see a shark, remain calm and slowly leave the water.
